A Middle Eastern spice mixture of herbs, sesame seeds, and sumac, perfect for sprinkling on meats, vegetables, or bread with olive oil.

Ingredients

  

Spice Mixture
  • ¼ cup sumac
  • 2 tablespoons thyme
  • 1 tablespoon roasted sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons marjoram
  • 2 tablespoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt

Instructions

 

  1. Grind the sesame seeds in a food processor or with a mortar and pestle.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
  3. Store za’atar in a cool, dark place in a plastic zip bag or airtight container.
  4. When stored properly, za’atar can be used for 3 to 6 months.
