Apple Sage Bread

Fragrant quick bread with apples, raisins, walnuts, and a subtle sage finish.

Ingredients

  

  • 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour (unbleached)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup raisins
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped

Instructions

 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a small Bundt or loaf pan.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients. Blend buttermilk, applesauce, and melted butter; combine with dry just to mix.
  3. Fold in raisins, walnuts, and sage. Bake ~45 minutes or until a tester comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan; turn out and cool completely.

Notes

Good with tea; the sage note blooms after eating.
