Chewy Black Licorice Chocolate Brownies

Rich brownies layered with licorice root powder, anise, and bits of soft black licorice.

Ingredients

  

  • 1 ½ stick unsalted butter, melted (plus more for pan)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons licorice root powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground anise seeds
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • ½ cup soft black licorice chews, chopped (about 3 oz)

Instructions

 

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Line a 9-inch square pan with parchment/foil; butter the liner.
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa, licorice powder, anise, and salt. In another bowl whisk butter with both sugars; whisk in eggs and vanilla.
  3. Stir in dry mixture, then most of the chocolate and licorice; spread in pan. Press remaining chocolate/licorice on top.
  4. Bake ~40 min until a tester has a few moist crumbs. Cool completely; lift out and cut into 12 rectangles.
